Almanac: September 21, 1972 – Marcos declares Martial Law

September 21, 1972 – President Ferdinand Edralin Marcos issued Proclamation No. 1081 placing the entire Philippines under Martial Law. The proclamation itself was dated 17th of September, but it was signed later on the 21st. Marcos used lawlessness, chaos, the 15 separate incidences of bombings, and the fabricated assassination of Defense Secretary Juan Ponce Enrile (6 hours earlier before the proclamation) as reasons for the suspension of the Writ of Habeas Corpus.
